Success is not something that is simply achieved. It is the result of many processes, and more importantly, many qualities that you need to develop or possibly acquire that will finally elevate you to success. One of the most important of these steps to success is to become a person of integrity.Integrity is a word that you might have heard a lot, but what does it actually mean? And how is it to become a person of integrity?
Let’s begin with the definition of integrity in the dictionary…
– Become a person of integrity…definitions:
Integrity is quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.”
Since it is originally derived from the Latin word “integer” the word “integrity” means (complete / whole).
The state of being whole and undivided.”
Similarly, Coach Wooden defines integrity in his book “ Pyramid of Success” as follows:
Integrity in its simplest form is purity of intention. It’s keeping a clean conscience. But it is also a composite of some of the other mortar qualities in the pyramid. To some extent, integrity contains a bit of reliability, a healthy helping of honesty and a portion of sincerity. However, I believe that the component of purity of intention is important enough to give integrity the status of mortar in its own right.”
– It is All About a Good Heart:
Coach Wooden then explains that the real source of integrity is naturally from the heart…
Purity of intention is really a reflection of the heart, and having a pure heart is so important that I placed it near the top of the pyramid, just under patience. The heart of a person with integrity always wants to do what’s right, once he or she is sure what ‘right’ is.”
And he goes on saying…
I wanted my players to become men of integrity. When we have integrity, we are not going to do anything that will be demeaning to anybody else, either on or off the court.”
– Become a person of integrity… examples.
The five people who first come to mind that best reflect the quality of integrity are Jesus, my dad, Abraham Lincoln, Mother Teresa , and Billy Graham. The order of the last three really doesn’t matter.”
And he explains…
One of the common threads between these people is that each was genuinely concerned about the betterment of others. The critics of each might not agree, but in my mind, the integrity of their commitments to regard others as more important than themselves sets them apart. Mother Teresa has been quoted as saying, ‘A life not lived for others is not a life.”
The most important word in our language is love”
As coach holding his success as a pyramid, he divided it into various layers build upon each other, each layer is a quality that is essential to achieve success .Qualities like reliability, patience, sincerity, integrity…Coach specified an advice related to each of these layers and the one which was first linked to the layer of integrity was that it “speaks for itself” , but years later he gave a second thought of this advice and decided to replace it . He found that the true meaning of integrity that people need to understand is that – to become a person of integrity – it means that you have purity of intentions which of course comes from a pure heart.
Coach Wooden believed that every coach has to become a person of integrity since he mentioned this in his book “Practical Modern Basketball”:
A coach who is not a sound and honest man has no place in the development of our youth.”
As we said, integrity comes from the Latin word “ Integer ” which means (whole or complete) and if you describe a person with integrity, you tell that he is a man who follows a code of morals that is never broken, divided, or adapted to the person’s desires . This is exactly how Coach sees the true meaning of integrity. He knew that to become a person of integrity you should devote your life to help others, to put them before yourself, and to follow good moral principles straight with no turns.
You cannot live a perfect day without doing something for someone without a thought of repayment.”
Coach Wooden was known that he never erased a number from his phone book, he always kept being in contact with everyone he knew, call them, send them a letter , or visit them if possible. He kept being a source of positivity and motivation for all people around him .
Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” Lao-Tse
